Art Life
The art department at Houghton College offers a program of study that is structured to develop an understanding of the meaning, both past and present, of art in society. Art majors and minors acquire comprehensive experience in use of materials and technique, while gaining confidence in their ability to integrate faith, knowledge, and creativity. The art major complements the Christian liberal arts experience, preparing students for teaching, professional art production, and graduate studies. The program is diversified through a visiting-artist program, on-campus gallery exhibits, and field trips which expose students to the cultural resources of cities such as Buffalo, Rochester, New York, Washington D.C., Cleveland, and Toronto. The department also goes abroad to international art centers such as Paris, London, Rome, Florence, and Madrid during Mayterm sessions. The program seeks to broaden a student's understanding of all of the arts by requiring study in diciplines outside the area of concentration. The student thereby gains a more complete understanding of principles of design, materials use, and historic context. The art department at Houghton College is a singular environment in which to stimulate growth in faith, fellowship, and creative expression. |
